Evolution of Biome-BGC Over the Years
Biome-BGC has evolved over 25-years from a simple daily canopy photosynthesis model to a multi-vegetation model that accurately simulates carbon, water, and nitrogen (and their interactions) biogeochemical model that captures ecosystem development during succession. Biome-BGC is a well-recognized ecosystem process model that was used by scientists and NASA to derive global NPP estimates (Running et al. 2004).
The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Forest Ecology and Ecosystems Lab has played a significant role in the development of Forest-BGC and Biome-BGC (see models highlighted in red in the timeline above).
